Kvemo Kartli Kvemo Kartli has historically been located at the furthest frontiers of Georgia, which is why it has always been the first point of attack for numerous invaders. Historical monuments here are plentiful; for example, Bolnisi bishopry is one of the oldest in Georgia. Bolnisi Sioni was built in the 5th century, during Vakhtang Gorgasali's reign. Bishop David and the date of the cathedral's construction, 478-493 are both mentioned in the inscription on the walls.

Kvemo Kartli The ruins of the town of Dmanisi are world famous. In 1990, during archaeological excavations, Scientists discovered the oldest remains of a Eurasian man ever found, dated to 1.7 million years ago. Archaeologists have unearthed only a small portion of the area where the ancient dwellings were discovered. Here also is the Dmanisi Sioni basilica from the 9th century, along with some small churches and other buildings.

Bethany monastery, founded in the 12th and 13th centuries during the epoch of Queen Tamar, is located in the valley of the Vere River. There are masterfully painted frescos on the walls, and Queen Tamar is represented on one of them. One may reach the Monastery via the scenic Tbilisi-Kojori motorway. There are many trails in the area as well, for those fond of horseback tours.
